At Event Cycle, we are dedicated to creating sustainable solutions for the events industry while making a positive social impact. This year, we had the privilege of partnering once again with the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) to recreate the essential water bottle holders used by the ball girls at the prestigious cinch Championships, held at The Queen's Club.
Following the success of last year's project, the LTA approached us once again to produce 85 more water bottle holders for the ball girls to use throughout The Championships, all of who were also provided with a BRITA reusable water bottle. These holders are not only functional but also represent our commitment to sustainability and social value. Each holder is meticulously crafted by a talented team of sewers, who work under flexible conditions to accommodate their unique personal circumstances.
Empowering Through Flexible Working
Our sewers at Calluna Upcycling, many of whom face challenges such as managing illness, caregiving responsibilities, or recovering from trauma, benefit greatly from the flexible working arrangements they are offered. Supported by the charity Landau, they are able to work from home at their own pace, ensuring they can balance their work with their personal needs. This model allows them to earn a fair wage based on the number of products they complete, without the pressure of strict deadlines.
Repurposing Materials for Sustainability
The water bottle holders are crafted using repurposed materials, showcasing our dedication to sustainability. The materials include 0.08 sqm of mesh from sports event banners, 0.08 sqm of thermal lining previously used as packing material, 0.01 sqm of flag material from a major sports event, and 0.13 sqm of banners from past events repurposed into sturdy straps. Even the labels are offcuts from a fabric printing process. The only new materials used were the cord and D rings, ensuring durability and functionality.
Showcasing Skill and Dedication
The 85 water bottle holders have been prominently used by the ball girls throughout The Championships, ensuring they stayed hydrated while efficiently carrying their water around the courts. The accompanying plinth, provided by the LTA, informed spectators about the creation process, and took a central place in The Championship’s grounds.
A Partnership for Positive Change
This project, initially facilitated by CSM Live and now managed by Wasserman with full support from the LTA, exemplifies how partnerships can drive positive change. By choosing Event Cycle, the LTA not only received high-quality, sustainable products but also contributed to a socially responsible initiative that empowers individuals facing personal challenges.
We are grateful to the LTA for their continued trust and support and are proud to be a part of such a prestigious event. Together, we are demonstrating that sustainability and social value can go hand in hand, creating a lasting impact on both the events industry and the wider community.
